Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 22 first grade students are playful hands-on-learners in our Boston Public School. One third of our student population speaks a language other than English at home and over 66% qualify as high needs.
My students love talking about books.
Some ask to read at break times. Others are starting to figure out how to sound out words to uncover the meaning of sentences. Still others are noticing that they can sing songs like "Row, row, row your boat" and find the corresponding words on a page. Exposure to the right kind of books helps my first graders focus on print in new and challenging ways. Books open new worlds to them. These students love to read. You can help them continue to grow as readers.
My Project
Imagine children curling up on a blue rug, with a stuffed animal in hand and a book in the other. We have the rug, the stuffed animals and plenty of reading partners; we just need the right kind of books. My classroom has a range of readers. Some readers are still learning their letter sounds. Other readers are able to access books at a 3rd grade level. To ensure everyone has the right kind of books- books that are accessible, interesting and the right kind of challenge- we need to update our collection. We need more variety in our growing library and would appreciate your support.
