Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our student population includes 400+ students, half of which are on free or reduced-price lunch. The particular students that are in my class are in the Special Education class. They have learning disabilities in Reading and Math. Some students have Dyslexia and some have Dyscalculia. Our students need all the tools we can think of to continue their learning process.
Most of our students require a calculator to perform mathematics tasks in the classroom and everyday life.
All 8th graders in our school have a graphing calculator, however, the 6th and 7th graders do not have any calculators. For my group of students, have a math learning disability makes it difficult to perform with the rest of their classmates. They begin to develop anxiety with performing math skills and the use of calculators alleviates that anxiety.
My Project
A Math Learning Disability doesn't mean you have to be bad at math. Most of my students hate math because they can't get it. Using an amazing computer math program, STARR success stories and workbooks from a great source, students will work in groups to develop math skills. The computer program incorporates gaming and the workbooks will help with one-on-one, teacher lead lessons to focus on each student as an individual. Students will use math tools to help them ease anxiety and develop better and stronger math skills. We need calculators too. With the successful completion of each lesson the student will be able to incorporate previous lessons with new ones and will also develop a great sense of self with math.
