My Students

What is your why?

While students at our school come from high poverty backgrounds, the challenges they may face on a daily basis have not affected their passion for learning.

At our school, students come from a low socioeconomic background. 100 percent of students receive free lunches, indicating that their families are at the federal poverty level.

As educators, we strive to create an environment that is relevant and engaging for our students. We work our hardest to provide students with experiences that will encourage them as learners and fuel their desire to learn. It is important that these students have resources and activities set them up for success.

My Project

I teach students of diverse backgrounds and this year I have worked really hard to find more literature that is more relevant and engaging for my students. Since doing this in my classroom and trying to install a love of literature in my students, our reading test scores are increased by leaps and bounds. Not only have we made this growth in this measurable way, but I have students who are beginning to love reading again. In our classroom, we have some literature that is high interest and engaging for my students and I am unable to keep these books on the shelves.

I have found my students are in need of engaging books, to help to continue to instill in my students a passion for reading and a love of literature.

I need more books that my students won't want to set down! These students need that love of literature to open a whole new world to them. I would love to get their hands on more highly engaging middle school books to be used by students in literature circles in my classroom. We will not only be reading these books, but engaging in discussions on the issues facing students.
