This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Closing the achievement gap has always been a priority for the students I serve. My motto this year is "Progress, not perfection!" These simple words describe my little eager beavers in my classroom. They can make greater progress towards closing the achievement gap if they are better equipped with the tools and experiences necessary for academic success.
Approximately 60% of the students in my class come from single parent homes and they spend on average 8-11 hours at school and after-school programs.
I believe that every student is gifted in something and it is my goal to help them reach their full potential by providing them access to a quality education.
My Project
Providing each student with a copy of these grade level appropriate core literature books will provide the students access to materials that support literacy. These stories were carefully chosen to correlate with the thematic units I will be using in my classroom this year. My students will have opportunities to interact with rich, culturally responsive literature, in addition to making meaningful connections, and further building their skills as readers. These books will attend to grade level standards for vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and literary analysis. I will use these texts to create relevant lessons that address the Common Core grade-level standards for writing, reading comprehension, listening, and speaking.
