My Students
The acquisition of language, and being able to use it, is often taken for granted by those of us with normal hearing. All my students have language delays due to varying degrees of hearing loss. They struggle daily to communicate their thoughts and feelings effectively.
This is my 10th year as a Deaf Education teacher in a public school setting.
I have a self-contained class that serves students in grades kindergarten through 5th. I have the only deaf/hard of hearing self-contained classroom in the county's public school system and currently have 6 students in 4 different grades that are bused from various districts throughout the county. My students are mainstreamed in regular classes for various subjects and/or related arts activities. All of my students use cochlear implants or hearing aids to help them hear and acquire language. Their language delays range from a year to several years when compared to their hearing peers. My students are fun, energetic, enthusiastic and curious learners. Due to their lack of hearing, they are very tactile, kinesthetic and visual learners.
My Project
My students need a variety of high interest, quality hands on reading and writing materials to further their language development. The materials I am requesting will help my students in their acquisition of language.I am asking for a complete set of reading and writing activity stations and a complete set of reading in a flash learning tubs. By having a variety of hands on reading and writing materials available in our own classroom my students will have easy access to the tools they need to become lifelong readers and writers. Most importantly, they can use these new resources to build vocabulary, comprehension, critical thinking skills and writing in a way that they learn best!
Regardless of your job in life, communication is essential.
It is even more crucial to develop these essential skills for children with language delays. These requested materials will help provide quality reading and writing materials, as well as an engaging, hands-on approach to acquiring the language skills necessary to succeed in life.
