Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My middle school students are bright, funny, and engaging; and they love reading! They come from a Los Angeles neighborhood where many struggle with poverty, language barriers, and the realities of modern urban life. Due to the pandemic, our campus closed on March 13th, and students who relied on the school community for books, food, and health services are now struggling. Several of my students' families have suffered job losses and have turned to food pantries, just to get by.
This project will benefit a group of kind-hearted, motivated, and book-loving students who are in the most need!
Our school’s enrollment is approximately 1,500 students. All of the students at our school receive federal breakfast and lunch programs. In addition, approximately 26% of the students are English language learners. There is a group foster home right across the street from our school, so a number of our students are foster youth. Approximately 15% of our students have special needs, as we have a variety of great Special Education programs at our school. Our school's ethnic makeup reflects the diversity of the surrounding community: Latino, African American, Asian, and Caucasian.
My Project
Many of my students are really struggling right now. They rely on our school community for academic instruction, food, emotional support, and learning materials. Due to the pandemic, many of their parents have been laid off or had their work hours reduced. My students need basic school supplies, books, and some fun snacks to keep them motivated, nourished, and learning.
A surprise happy mail package delivered to my students' homes will lift their spirits and keep them learning at a time when they need it most.
With your help, my students will soon be reading new stories and have the tools they need to help them to be life-long readers and seekers of knowledge.
