This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are all part of a Head Start program in the public school system. Most of my students are African-American and, due to the nature of Head Start, come from poor, urban, inner-city areas. Most receive other forms of government assistance, and I worry if some families have food to eat over the weekend.
These are the students who are often misjudged and undervalued.
They are written off before they have a chance, and they are only three years old! Despite having almost every card stacked against them, they show up every day, ready and eager to learn.
My students are so eager to show the world how great they can be!
My Project
I was thrilled to be part of a new program in my district this year, but it meant my room was stocked with the bare minimum of materials. My students have had the same books to read all year - boring!
An early love of reading will build lifelong learners.
It is essential that the students have access to a variety of books on a variety of topics.
The requested sets include multi-cultural books by Ezra Jack Keats, classics by Eric Carle, and National Geographic books to foster scientific curiosity and exploration. These books will help expose students to worlds which they would not otherwise experience.
