Loving Black Lives: An Elementary Library

Help me give my students stories that affirm black lives in addition to the ones about slavery, segregation and the struggles black people face.

My Students

My students may come from meager means, humble homes, and fractured families, but they come eager and excited to learn. My Title I school houses students K-8 and provides each and everyone with not only breakfast and lunch but a classroom that serves as a home.

They are not just my students, but my family, and each year I am lucky enough to begin a school year with new members.

While my family continues to grow, their needs continue to be met with proper support and dedication.

My Project

As I continue to teach and my students strive towards success in a world that appears to be ever-changing, we all attempt to do our best, to learn, to grow, and to survive. When it comes to my students, I want to promote a space and culture that is not only accepting but empowering. I want to include a library that lends itself to lessons that encourage acceptance and appreciation of oneself.

My classroom library should not only represent characters and stories that mirror my students' own faces and experiences, but lend itself to the promotion of self love.

It is extremely important to provide my students with literature that boosts moral, lifts spirits, and showcases the beauty of their skin, their minds, and their attitudes.
