This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”— Dr. Seuss
My students love learning and love reading.
My students love to pick up the books in my classroom. However, most of the books that I have are not suitable for them to read independently. I work with middle school students with intellectual disabilities. They range in reading abilities from non-readers to 2nd grade reading levels. I want my students to be able to go over to my classroom library, pick up a book, and know that they will be able to read most if not all of that book.
My Project
My students will have the opportunity to use these sets of leveled books at all times of the day. This means when they are finished breakfast in the morning, completed an assignment, during independent reading, or other appropriate classroom times. They will be able to read these books independently or with a partner.
I work in an urban middle school setting where most of the materials are geared to that age.
My students do not have the necessary books to read independently even though they love to read. I am hoping that by introducing them to books at their level that they will continue to feel confident reading and begin to show more growth in vocabulary and understanding.
