My students need access to more nonfiction texts at their own personal read levels to better support their science learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My elementary students are learners in Title 1 school in Carson City, Nevada. Because over 80% of student population qualifies for free/reduced lunch, our school provides free breakfast and lunch to students. Most students come from a low socioeconomic households and it's not uncommon for each classroom to have at least few students to qualify for McKinney-Vento services for individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. Many of our students' families can not provide them with extracurricular activities, home libraries, extra school supplies, or personal technological devices.
These students are extremely eager to learn!
These students love read aloud stories, 'just right' books and magazines, hands-on science (STEM/STEAM activities) and real life application (even if that means a virtual field into a rain forest). They are just as eager to build and create with math tools and manipulative as they are with Legos. They are excited to explore and make connections between their new ideas and their world. They are are very in charge of their learning and I hope to provide them tools and materials to improve the quality of it.
My Project
These non-fiction readers will provide our classroom with rich text that will excite these young readers. They are leveled based on their ability, so that students can choose high interest readers at comfortable, just right, and challenging levels. My readers range from kindergarten levels to third grade levels, so this would help suit all of our budding scientists. Non-fiction text in my current classroom library is scarce and limited. These texts will excite my students and create a passion for learning in their young lives. Science will become text rich if we are provided with these non-fiction books. Our students use Genius Hour to design their passion driven science based projects and these books will provide the great inspiration and foundations they need. We will also be able to learn and understand non-fiction text features such as headings and subheadings, table of contents and index.
If we have access to these non-fiction leveled text, my students would not only be able to read about the things that interest them, but they will also be able to access content areas with fascinating and literacy rich texts.
While our class has used several online resources as whole class, but these leveled texts allow students to advocate for their own learning by choosing a "just right" book to individualize their education. It allows for low readers a chance reinforce their foundations in literacy and science and the higher readers to be challenged at their next reading level.
