My Students

Can you remember what life was like before you could read? Reading is a foundational skill that is taught starting in Kindergarten. One way that reading is learned is through retelling familiar stories.

I have 20 hard working kindergarten students.

I teach at a culturally diverse, Title 1 school where over half of our population receives free and reduced price lunch. Our classroom ranges from English Language Learners to highly gifted. My students are motivated by hands-on, engaging activities.

My Project

When we begin learning to read we first begin "reading" by reading pictures and retelling stories. Our classroom is lacking materials that can be used to retell stories. As a class, we can use flannel board retelling sets and puppets to retell familiar stories as a whole group and then students can retell these stories again and again in a learning station.

These new flannel board retelling sets and retelling puppets will keep my students actively engaged in their learning.

These ready-made sets will allow the students to increase their learning with little or no assistance. My students will be successful and well on their way to learning to read with the help of these resources.
