Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students walk in. They know when the bell rings, it is silent reading time. A few students have finished their books and are ready to move on. They line up orderly to get new books. Chaos ensues. Students dig through cardboard boxes on my cart. They cannot see all their options, and get discouraged. They grab any old book. Books are left tattered on the floor, abandoned and discarded before they stood a chance to open a new world to the class.

As a 9th and 10th grade English teacher in the Bronx, I am aiming to improve student reading levels before they take the SAT's and state test next year. Right now, students are an average of three years behind in their reading levels. Without improving their reading level, they will not pass. I provide the books, but I share multiple classrooms with multiple teachers. I keep my supplies on a cart, and my independent reading books in cardboard boxes. Student can never find books they want.

Studies have been proved that the best way to improve student reading levels is to READ. Simple enough, right? So my students spend class time every day reading. They love it - love reading books, love picking the books out themselves, love the quiet time to start off class. I am trying to organize all of my books on my cart. I cannot set it up without bookshelves. Bookshelves are all I need to make my books appealing and available to all students!
