As we enter into the winter months in Oregon, often times there can be a sense of loneliness, sadness, and sometimes depression that can settle in after the holidays. During our morning meetings we are discussing the importance of social awareness and acknowledging when our classmates might be feeling some of these emotions. We are brainstorming different ways we can offer each other encouragement.
I truly believe that a simple act of kindness can go a long way, and that is why I would like to have my class make love rocks that can be shared amongst our school community.
First, I would like to read the two books that share stories of how different characters made love rocks to help them cope with a variety of hurts they were experiencing in their lives. By doing an act of kindness, it actually made them feel better, which is a powerful message behind making a love rock.
I am also asking for rocks, acrylic pens, and art design books to be used for an after school club I hope to do with our older grade levels at my school. The rock craft kits will give each one of my students 5 individual rocks to create that can be given to their classmates as well as other staff in the building.
The overall goal is to create a love rock garden near our vegetable beds on the playground where the decorated rocks can be placed. My hope is this rock garden provides inspiration, motivation, and a space where each child feels cared for.
