My Students

As a teacher that taught in a Grade 4 Special Education Resource Classroom during this past school year, I will be changing to 6th grade for this school year. We will be departmentalized, meaning I will be teaching English Language Arts (ELA) which includes both reading and writing to all 60+ 6th graders at our elementary school.

The students at our school are kind, compassionate, and enthusiastic.

My goal for the year is to encourage my students' enjoyment of reading and writing, particularly after a tough school year during the COVID pandemic. Since many students do not have access to books at home and rely on school to enjoy high-quality books, a classroom is an important place to foster the love of literature.

My Project

To foster students' enjoyment of reading, I like doing whole group read alouds and have students engage in literature group discussions of novels that include topics and themes that push them. Having these class sets of books will allow for my kids to engage in discussions with their peers and to create a love of reading and a higher level of thinking and engagement while reading together. My 6th grade students should be engaging with actual novels that are more challenging them.

During literature groups, I have seen students question, push, and support one another while engaging with a text.

Students often love engaging in these opportunities to do small group literature groups, because they get to work together with their peers instead of just hearing their teacher speaking at them.
