Reflecting back on my own elementary years, I can clearly recall the teachers who were pivotal figures in fostering my deep love for reading. Reading provided me with a purpose and an escape into another world when my own world was too difficult to face. I choose every year to work in a Title 1 school in order to reach students who live in poverty, have experienced trauma, and are facing a disadvantage in some way.
The majority of my students are English Language Learners who, despite facing numerous disadvantages, arrive to school eager and willing to develop and apply their new language, expand their understanding of themselves and others, and take huge risks within the safe walls of our classroom.
My students are thoughtful, inquisitive, and extremely hardworking. Their resiliency inspires me every single day!
First grade is a year for making sure students love, live, and breathe (and really start to read) great books, especially for our ELL students. My list of books includes everything from picture books to inspire great discussions, humorous read alouds, and high interest early readers. The engaging picture books will help my students build their vocabulary, deepen their comprehension skills, learn to navigate social issues, develop a growth mindset, and build an appreciation of diversity through meaningful multicultural literature. The early readers will motivate and build the confidence of my budding readers, and hopefully contribute to a lifelong love of reading!
