This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I would like to improve my instruction in the classroom in order to be the best possible teacher to my deserving students. I seek to take a 6-week course in 4-6 grade mathematics. The course will provide me with tools to apply in the classroom, boosting student engagement and retention of math concepts. The course will have an emphasis on building students' vocabulary, problem solving strategies, and real world application. I will learn how to productively use geometry manipulatives, fraction bars, math journals, and family math nights to improve students understanding. These tools will enable me to continue giving kids the repetition they need to be successful. For example: a lesson taught in class about adding and subtracting fractions would typically conclude after I finish teaching. However, with the tools from this class I can have students take home their math journals and continue practicing, and getting repetition by sending home a fun math game or family game nights based around math concepts and skills.
