Help me give my students the gift of reading and learning about their world. I’m primarily a reading teacher and having access to books helps me immensely with building a love of reading in their hearts.
My students are all Athabaskan Natives, living in the small village of Northway which is about a 35 miles from the Canadian border. This is a low-income area and finding funding to start new and interesting activities can be difficult.
There is a whole new world out there that these students have not been often provided with a vision of what they can see and experience.
They live in one of the most beautiful areas of the world, backed up to the Rangel-St. Elias National Park. Assisting these young men and women to better the quality of their education will be pivotal in directing the path that their lives take.
My Project
In this cold area, where today it is -57 degrees, it is important for kids to have access to good books to read. This project makes a dramatic difference in their lives.
Books are a window into another world.
Making books a part of their lives assists them with growing and learning. Learning how to read makes the rest of their education far easier thereby making graduation more likely.
I would like some of these books to go home with students so that parents can have the ability to read to their kids. Thus students and parents are more likely to learn that reading is an important part of learning.
