My Project

Studying Shakespeare is an essential experience in the high school English classroom. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet has stood the test of time because teenagers can still connect with the themes of the text today. Romeo and Juliet is a play - so it is meant to be read out loud. My students love to divvy up parts and read each scene.

The books we are currently using to read are falling apart: some are missing pages, others have pages falling out, and some are even impossible to flip through.

These new books would allow my students to follow along and read in class as we study Romeo and Juliet. Not only do they include the original version of the text, but a modern translation as well. This helps students who are overwhelmed with the language of the play gain a better understanding of what is going on in the plot. We always read aloud in the original dialogue, but students struggling to understand have a quick and easy reference to help them follow along.

In addition, the Romeo and Juliet graphic novels are a great support in the classroom for English Language Learners. They can help students connect the dialogue in the play to a visual representation of what is happening in the scene.
