My Students

I teach in an urban school. I know that sounds scary to some people, but honestly, it's pretty amazing. Yes, our students face challenges, and yes, there are obstacles we have to overcome, but the kids are absolutely amazing. They have a thirst for knowledge even if some times they need help identifying it. Occasionally, they need extra love, more encouragement, and a push forward, but once they get going, there is no stopping them.

My Project

Students are what they read. Perhaps that was a truer statement when we were students, with our world quickly becoming more and more visual media centered. Kids' attention span is the length of a meme or a TikTok and many of them have never really enjoyed the experience of getting lost in a thick novel. I want to build a classroom library for my students.

I'd like for my students to find a love of literature and discover its immeasurable value in developing empathy for others, as well as making connections to our modern world, by providing them with the opportunity to read for pleasure on a daily basis.

Studies show that students who read for pleasure have increased vocabulary, better grammar, and can become better critical thinkers. Reading encourages students to make connections; it offers them an opportunity to go on adventures and put themselves into another person's shoes. We need to devote more time for our students to read material that interests them to nurture their creative and critical thinking. Better readers become better writers, who go on to accomplish greater goals.

Please consider donating to my classroom library and bringing the joy of literature to my students!
