My Students

Our classroom community is made up of a diverse group of incoming kindergarten students who vary in ethnicity, home language, socioeconomic status, and learning style. Developmentally, kindergarten is an exciting mix of interests, abilities, and goals. As we learn to read, write, and count, we love to learn with one another and from one another.

As teachers, we are committed to creating an equitable learning environment in which ALL children can grow academically and socially.

Beginning this school year still within the throes of a pandemic provides new challenges and opportunities. We are meeting students' unique and diverse needs by providing high-quality, engaging opportunities for learning.

My Project

Literacy stations are a fantastic, engaging, and effective structure in the kindergarten classroom. Students independently cycle between stations where they hone their skills and deepen their learning by practicing key literacy strategies. Literacy stations also support young learners to gain independence and autonomy within the classroom while the teacher works with small groups to target specific skills.

The materials in this project will create an additional literacy station as well as organize station materials so that students can access our learning tools without requiring assistance from an adult.

The listening station and corresponding books on CD will provide an opportunity for beginning readers to match spoken words to written words within a text, as well as practice their reading fluency. Sterilite plastic latch boxes will store station manipulatives and games so students can access materials independently. Both texts are classic, essential teaching resources which support educators in establishing and maintaining literacy centers as well as planning guided reading lessons (which will occur in small groups during literacy rotations). The wobble stool will be for the teacher during small group, accompanying the student-sized wobble stools that are already in the classroom.

This year I will be moving to a new classroom space which presents unique challenges, especially while still in the throes of a pandemic. These materials help our whole classroom community start the year off right. Literacy stations will support our youngest learners gain independence while strengthening literacy skills, which will lead to a lifelong love of learning and success as future scholars.
