Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 4th grade teacher in the South Bronx. I currently have 35 students of mixed academic ability and levels. In addition a number of my students receive special services such as speech, resource room, counseling, and ESL. While scrounging for materials on a Biography to read with my students I came across materials on Louis Braille. I thought that his biography would be wonderful to do with my students. I dug even further, but unfortunatly I only found a handful of very tattered copies of the book. I respectfully request some assistance in obtaining this book for my class. I strongly believe that this biography will teach my students many valuable life long social and academic lessons. It will teach them the importance of not allowing a disability to limit their dreams and or abilities. It will show them respect for the disabled and even encourage them to work with the disabled. Academically this book will assist my students with elements of a biography, vocabulary aquisition, personality traits, goals, dialogue, sequence of events, main idea, time lines etc. In addition they will write biographies and identify their own strenghts which will help them see that they are valued and have a lot to offer. On a cross curriculum note this book opens the door to lessons on inventions and patents, legislation involving persons with disabilities and developing new ideas to assist the disabled. I hope that you can see that my students will really benefit from this material. I hope that providing this material for my children will improve their reading levels, broaden their imagination, creativity, build self respect and respect for others especially those with disabilities.
