My classroom is performance oriented with a stage, a full set of risers, and more instruments than you would expect in the average elementary classroom. We make music with our own hands and breath, and we do it well. I'm in my sixth year at this school, and in the time I've been here, my students have become multi-instrumentalists on the bass, mandolin, piano, and drums. Some students like to switch around between the instruments, while others have "specialized" and concentrate all their learning on just one. Either way is fine by me, as long as they're learning and enjoying music and school.
My Project
Last year, lots of great things happened in our music classroom! We had five Donors Choose projects funded for several GoPro cameras, a sound recording device and a yearlong subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of app which contains After Effects. All of this was used last year to create amazing music videos of our students performing at different concerts in and out of the school setting.
My students did all the camera work, set up all the equipment, and decided what cuts and edits to use while I did the actual work in After Effects to stitch it all together.
This year, with our renewed subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud, I can begin to turn over more work to the students and let them do more of the editing and clipping in the software now that they've had a whole year to see what video editing is all about. Many teachers will ask for this Creative Suite and not know what they're getting into as the learning curve is pretty high for these programs. And then the program will sit for a year having wasted money. But if you clicked that link above you will see that we actually use it and need it to put together our music videos. We have gotten way past just using an iPhone on a tripod stand to film one long scene. Thank you for helping us to renew our subscription to the Creative Cloud and continue making our music videos! We just did our winter concert and our Adobe subscription from last year will expire on January 10!
