My Project
My autistic support students need to learn domestic maintenance life skills (food prep, cleaning, laundry) in a safe and fun environment in order to build their independence and confidence.
The materials included in this Donors Choose will allow for us to embed curriculum concepts from ELA (reading recipes and instructions), math (counting, matching, sorting), science (observing, describing, creating), and social studies (multicultural exposure and engagement) in fun and rewarding activities that families can replicate at home.
A bright and joyful rug with comfy seating will provide a space where they can congregate to listen to instructions. Storage bins will allow for visible organization of items. Washing machine, detergent, hamper, clothes pins, and drying rack will support practice sorting, washing, and putting away fabric materials as well as fine motor skills of pincer grasp. Bus bins and dishes will allow for step-wise practice of washing and rinsing dishes. Laminator, sheets, and velcro will allow for creation of durable materials that can be used repeatedly throughout the year.
