My Students

My 3rd and 4th grade students are becoming environmentally aware and want to learn everything about protecting water resources but they need help.

Well over half of my students qualify for free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch but we are not a Title I school and as a result, we lack the resources and opportunities of many schools.

My school is close to 2 military bases and a significant number of my students are dependents of deployed military personnel. Our small K-6 public school is over 30 years old, and many of my wonderful students are deemed at-risk. Although they represent the very best in America, my students don't have the funds for school supplies or field trip fees, but they want to start doing something for the school and the world. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. It is 39% Anglo; 14% African American/Black; 16% Alaskan Native and American Indian; 7% Asian; 6% Hispanic; 3% Filipino; 15% multiracial. Ten percent are in bilingual/ELL programs. They are diverse but they are learning to work together as a learning community.

My Project

My students are ready to make a real difference but they need help learning how to care for the environment and how to become successful citizens. I am starting a lunch-in-the-library Lorax group for third and fourth graders. I plan to teach students how to do things that are not normally contained in our curriculum. I am requesting a Captain Planet EcoSTEM Water Kit so my students can learn everything about water. It is perfect for my kids. I plan to fully implement the kit so my students can observe and collect data using the Water Cycle Model; they can explore plastic pollution with Algalita's Ocean Debris Investigation Kit; and they can test physical and chemical parameters of water quality. My students will learn how to document their research and activities. Then I plan to get them outdoors to study the water in our creek. Finally, my Lorax kids will also design and conduct an environmental stewardship project which they will communicate to our community at a science fair.

My students spend most of their time inside watching TV or video games and as a result few of them have the opportunity to learn about the environment but this project will get them looking critically at water quality and thinking about what they can do to help.

This project will help make it possible for my students to learn and grow while they learn to care. Please consider making a difference in the lives of my students by making a donation.
