This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Crochet isn’t just a hobby—it’s a skill-building activity that fosters patience, problem-solving, and creativity.

In a world where students are constantly bombarded with screens and instant gratification, crochet provides a tactile, calming, and rewarding experience that allows them to slow down, focus, and create something tangible with their own hands.

This project will provide students with beginner crochet kits, yarn sets, ergonomic hooks, and step-by-step instructional books to help them learn essential skills such as: Fine Motor Development – Holding a crochet hook, looping yarn, and manipulating stitches strengthens hand-eye coordination and dexterity.

Pattern Recognition & Sequencing – Following crochet patterns teaches students to read and interpret instructions, reinforcing logical thinking and attention to detail.

Math & Spatial Awareness – Counting stitches, measuring yarn, and shaping 3D amigurumi animals builds mathematical thinking in a hands-on way.

Learning a new craft comes with mistakes, and crochet teaches students to embrace challenges and persevere through trial and error. Students will start with simple projects like finger puppets and friendship bracelets and progress to adorable amigurumi creatures like penguins, dinosaurs, and giraffes. With each completed project, they’ll gain confidence, patience, and a sense of accomplishment.

Beyond skill-building, crochet offers an incredible mental health benefit—it’s a calming and meditative activity that helps reduce stress and anxiety. Plus, students will have the opportunity to create handmade gifts for friends, family, or even community service projects.

With these materials, my students will learn a timeless craft, develop valuable life skills, and find joy in creating something uniquely their own—one stitch at a time.
