My Project
Harvard longitudinal happiness studies and books like "Bowling Alone" have proven that joining a community is a huge building block for wellness and long term happiness.
Sometimes the best part of school is the community of it all; the team you can join that brings home trophies, the club that beautifies the campus with a garden, the stage crew that puts on the best shows; these groups are everything to teenage students.
We can and do create those communities for our students. The groups or communities we build within our larger school community like to show they're connected to their neighbors or teammates by wearing the same gear.
This is where things get tough, as personalized gear is expensive and takes time to create. It's one of the biggest investments schools make year in and year out. If we had our own means of making this gear, we could save that time and money instead.
The Cricut machine, heat press, and jackets being requested in this project are the foundation of this process. Students need people to invest in them as makers and as joiners. Help me make my students into makers and gift them the means of producing and designing all the cool gear that they think is important.
Also, having a creative, one-of-a-kind drip incentivizes participation in these groups in the first place. Encouraging them to become joiners is one thing we can all do that will immunize kids against the polarization and isolation that causes so much pain in the world today.
Help me, help them, make that jacket they'll fish out of the garage sale in 20 years because it means so much.
