My Students

❝Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going.❞

My diverse learners from are English Language Learners in the 6th and 7th grade at a Title 1 school in Brooklyn.

They are dealing with typical middle school issues…in addition to being in America for less than 3 months. They are not only navigating their teenage years in middle school, but are navigating how to assimilate to our culture and learn a new language. Several have interrupted formal educations, causing educational setbacks on top of language barriers. Even though they are all English Language Learners, they all learn in their own way. While they are faced with a multitude of challenges, they are kind, smart, hardworking and come to class each day with the desire to learn.

My Project

With newest English Language Learners, my class numbers have grown. Right now, we only have enough Chromebook's for 10 students. My ESL students have to pair up with others to use the Chromebook's for various ESL lessons. My students will use their Chromebook's to expand their knowledge of the English language. They will be able to practice their reading and listening skills. They’ll be exposed to the English language at their own pace. They will be able to listen to class novels and hear the words being spoken. They will be able to watch short videos, connected to topics they are learning in their classes. They’ll be able to utilize different online language programs, where they can practice their English at their own speed.

Visuals are the ‘Golden Rule’ for English Language Learners.

My ESL students are visual learners; they need to see what is being taught! My students will gain the opportunity to see the world around them, and see parts of the world they may never witness. My students will gain more confidence their education and their abilities. They will feel a sense of pride when they can answer questions out loud. They will feel comfortable and mingle with their classmates, just being a teenager, keeping their culture while adjusting with ours.
