My Students
Fred Rogers wrote in his Mister Rogers Parenting Book that when I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping'. Now more than ever my students need to turn to the helpers as role models.
My school is close to two military bases and many of my students are the children of deployed military personnel.
The school has a tradition of being a neighborhood school, but it is now a school in transition. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. One out of every 9 students is in ELL programs. Our stable neighborhood is changing. 18.4% of the families receive supplemental Social Security income or public assistance. Over half of my students qualify for free or reduced price breakfast and lunch. Since we are not a Title 1 school we lack many of the resources that are available to other schools.
Although they represent the very best in America, my students suffer from low self esteem. We have problems with bullying and teasing. We need to change the climate in our school.
My Project
To build relisancy, compassion and empathy among my multiethnic and multilingual students, I need books about community helpers to use as the basis of a discussion group. Even though many of my students cannot read yet, they do enjoy listening to stories and looking at pictures. I plan to create a group of 2nd grade students who will listen and discuss books about tough topics and safety in our community. I will use the lessons in Bullying in the Schools to get students talking. then we will look at new role models in the books.
Sharing a book together will help students gain control over difficult situations. Learning about community helpers and heroes and understanding how they dealt with the situations helps create coping skills. Nonfiction books help answer questions students did not even know they had. We need these essential books. We need the help of Donors Choose.
Although they represent the very best in America, many of my 2nd graders suffer from low self esteem.
We have problems with bullying on the playground and teasing and name calling in the classroom. Stress is interfering with learning. We need to change the climate in our classroom. We need to confront stressful issues. I need copies of Bullying in the Schools and these books to help create a discussion group. My school can not afford these essential books. Help me to help my students.
