My Students

Remember 6th grade? A time of growth and confusion. My group of 6th graders, 15 boys and 11 girls, are demonstrating that they are 1.3 to 3 grade levels behind where they should be at this point in their education. Keeping 6th graders engaged in their work can be a struggle. While energetic and eager to learn, they come from low-income homes and attend our Title One school. We offer them love, support and encouragement as they grow into the amazing young adults they truly are, all the while stretching their social emotional, academic and executive functioning skills. All the while, encouraging to keep their futures in mind.

My Project

These materials will enable my students to represent their new found knowledge of the career they are looking at for their futures. Students will research many aspects of their hoped for career or trade such as: income, required education/experience, where or how to obtain said education or experience, benefits, and projected availability of that vocation. They will then represent the data found using their researched information, partially decorated by the use of the ink pads and letter stamps on the display boards for all to see at a special end of year celebration. Parents, peers, and teachers will see their work on display as the enter the event to celebrate students learning and life goals. Setting goals for their future and obtaining the information to assist in reaching their goal while thinking forward will help the students strive to meet their objectives for their long-term goals set during the research and creation process. Their primary learning outcomes for this project are: To sharpen research and writing skills, Teach S.MA.R.T. goal setting, and to motivate students to look realistically at their futures.
