My Project

The students in this unique group bring varying experiences to the classroom. Often, it is difficult for them to find motivation to read since school is not always easy for them. Most of my students have literacy deficiencies (ELL, SpEd, and other IEP-related struggles), so not only is the work they do in classes more challenging than it may be for others without these issues, it can also be more discouraging when they continue to not understand or do well.

My role as their teacher and goal in supplying these magazines and digital resources is not only to help the students build literacy skills, but it is also to encourage these students to find strength in learning by acknowledging and celebrating all they know and can do.

If students are able to engage with a text, personally reflect on its meaning, and share that connection with others, then they are acquiring the necessary tools to investigate, analyze, inquire, elaborate, and express what they are learning in their classes. If I can show them how to enjoy the challenge of reading, this productive struggle will stick with them throughout the rest of their high school career and lives.
