Many students that I teach have special needs. Several are still learning basic care needs. In middle school, students undergo a lot of body changes. My students often do not understand what is happening and their parents are unsure how to explain these changes to their students. The school steps in to help in these situations.
Basic self-care is a right for all students, regardless of disability.
My students deserve dignity in meeting their self-care needs to feel good about themselves. Deodorant wipes are a more accessible way to get rid of that middle school "funk". Often at this stage, students no longer want their parents to do their hair, even if they don't know how. With combs and hair ties, students can practice skills at school and then take items home to practice. Parents often feel at a loss explaining the menstrual cycle to their students with severe cognitive needs. With pads available at school, students can practice (privately) this basic self-care skill that is often brand new in middle school. As students get the tools they need, sanitation and cleanliness are priorities and we will need to keep all students' items separated - along with any changes of clothes that may be needed. My students are capable of doing these basic living skills for themselves, they just need to be given the tools to practice.
