Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an interesting group of 11-14 year olds who speak several different languages (mostly Spanish) and come from all around the world. They also come from multiple elementary schools scattered all around the school district and live at or below the poverty line.
My students are creative, smart and willing to work hard when they understand the lesson and have a flexible work space.
When they can freely move around the classroom space in order to get the materials or information they need to complete an assignment things go smoothly. They also thrive on the ability to either work alone or with a group depending on the assignment.
My students learn how to play keyboards, guitars and ukuleles as well as using computer programs to create music. The furniture they are currently working on is not conducive to freely moving around the room or choosing who, if anyone, to work with.
My Project
The document camera will help my students work through examples of new content together giving them the opportunity to learn from each other. When we are working on learning the placement of music notes on the staff, students often struggle with the concept because it is very precise. Working with the document camera and being able to project what we are doing on the board will enable all my students to see exactly what they need to do even if they do not speak English. The visual element will be a great help in building understanding of concepts with my non-English speaking students.
The junction boxes will enable small groups of students to listen to each other's music compositions and experiments as well as listen to and discuss examples of music that we are discussing as a class.
This will help to keep the classroom organized, allow students to work together and share their work with others in a way that does not disrupt other students who are working by themselves or on a different assignment.
The Bluetooth speaker will give us quality listening experiences as a class of both teacher presented materials as well as student presented materials. This speaker will replace the speakers that are currently in the music classroom that don't always work very well.
