I am a ninth-grade teacher at a school in the South Bronx where ninety-three percent of our students are eligible for free lunch. I am looking for funding to purchase 55 copies of Walter Dean Myers' "Monster" for my ninth-graders to read. "Monster" is an award-winning book that I have loved for many years. This incredible book tells the story of a young man who finds himself in prison and now must face his own role as an accomplice in a crime that resulted in someone's death. "Monster" addresses how no goes from being completely innocent to living in jail in one leap, there are interim stages where decisions to bend the law are made. Written partially in the first person and partially as a screenplay, "Monster" looks at these interim stages, where one experience seems to give permission for the next. "Monster" is the recommended book to use with the Ramp-Up program that I am teaching, but my school in the South Bronx does not have enough copies of this book or the money to purchase them. It would mean so much to my students to have copies of this book that they could read. Thank you very much!
