Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Help! I am a first year, Teaching Fellow, who teaches the third grade in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. I teach all subjects ranging from Math, Literacy, Reading, Writing, Social Studies, down to Science. I am working with a wonderful, bright, group of students, many of which are struggling both socially and academically. Despite this fact, my students are very hard workers and always strive to do their best both inside and outside of the classroom. It is so amazing to see them come in every morning ready to learn and excited about being able to learn something new. I have received many letters from my students telling me that they enjoy my class and all of the wonderful lessons that I teach and this inspires me to go on. Therefore, I am looking for something to inspire them to move on, which extends beyond the lessons that I teach everyday as well. At present my class does not have a set of Dictionaries, and as an educator that seeks to constantly challenge my students to Higher Order thinking, I find that I am constantly defining, explaining and or spelling words or whole entire paragraphs for my students. While, I do not mind giving students these answers, I find that this does not encourage them to think for themselves or to work hard to find the answers. In addition, I have found that when I assign homework where the students must utilize the dictionary, many of them do not complete the assignments. Their reasons usually center on the fact that they do not have dictionaries or access to the internet at home. I think that it is very important for my students to have dictionaries so that they may take advantage of the materials that they are being provided with, as well as to expand their vocabulary, improve their spelling, their grammar, their vernacular, and their writing. How fun would it be for my students to act as though they were real investigators who searched and found the definition for new words that they could impress their parents and friends with? How great would it be to see a remarked improvement in my students from September until they proceed to the 4th grade in June? How great of a feeling would it be for all of my students to pass their Citywide tests in April? How great would it be to know that it was because of you that my students have achieved great success and became intellectual thinkers at the tender age of 8 and 9 years of age? Therefore, I am asking for a set of class dictionaries for my 26 students. Any help that can be given is appreciated as my students are desperately in need of help in all of their subjects. Both my students and I will be very grateful for this opportunity to supplement their educational experience as well as their knowledge. Please help both my students and me continue to inspire one another.
