This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
We are a high-need public school in the inner city. Our students need as much help as possible. I teach two classes: Biology and Science & Sustainability. The grade of the students I have are ninth though twelfth grade.
When we updated our biology courses, we received a total of seven balances to share between all of our science courses, including chemistry, biology, environmental science and physics. Since then, five of our balances have been stolen and one has been broken. Balances are integral to science so we can put a specific amount of materials on so we can make reactions, show value, and have good, scientific data.
Because we have to share, the two newly funded balances are going to be locked at all times with the locks that I have put in the supplies list. We have been told that our budget will not support expensive items like balances, so we are doing the best we can with one balance but we'd like to do better.
Using balances and scales will help students understand the scientific method in regards to data and analysis. All students in college need to take a college class and being able to use a balance and a scale is fundamental to all science.
Your assistance will be integral to science, not specifically biology or science and sustainability. All students need to be able to use a balance or scale and be able to understand scientific notation as well as scientific method.
