My students need books to read about insects, spiders, and rocks, and microscopes to view them up close.

My Students
Viewed up close, a grain of sand becomes a planet, a leaf's veins look like a river, and a grasshopper's antennae is transformed into something from a science fiction cartoon. Looking at ordinary objects under a microscope changes a child's perception of the world.
My class of 25 second grade public school city kids are intensely curious about the natural world around them.
Many have limited access to nature. Their powers of observation are just emerging, as are their critical thinking skills. Our school has a well-developed art program, which keeps our students engaged in school. In my classroom I want to energize my second graders with a hands-on science curriculum.
My Project
My students need microscopes and magnifiers so they can view the world up close. We are fortunate to have a school garden full of all sorts of critters and objects to look at. Having these tools available to the students will enliven their encounters with plants, animals and rocks, making the learning experience more memorable and engaging. In combination with the texts I have requested, the students will come away with a deeper understanding of and interest in their world.
Microscopes, magnifiers, and books on the topics we will study in science this year will engage and inspire my students.
The microscopes that I have ordered are sturdy and simple enough to operate that 7 and 8 year old children will be able to use them with minimum instruction and supervision. This will enable them to pursue their own scientific interests. The books that I have ordered will provide background information on the topics we pursue.
