My Project

My tenth graders are curious about the world and want to learn about the past in order to plan for their future. One way we do this is by reading personal memoirs set during times of political upheaval.

George Takei's graphic memoir is a favorite with my students year after year -- especially my reluctant readers.

With a class set, we can all read and discuss the historical moment of Japanese Internment and how it impacts the personal lives of not just one family, but several. As a precursor to Julie Otsuka's, "When the Emperor Was Divine", Takei's story serves as a way to give context to our next novel.

This year, a student told me: "Everyone should read this book!" I agree! Funding this project will ensure more readers next year.
