“The whole world opened up to me when I learned to read” – Mary McCleod Bethune. Every day, 24 eight to nine year olds arrive in my classroom eager to be at school to learn.
My students come to school each day, excited to enjoy the many opportunities of learning that is provided during the school day.
The minute they step in the door, they know that we are a family that treats each other with love and respect. It is a safe place where they know they can be seen and heard. Even though we may look, act, and speak differently, and come from very different cultural backgrounds, we have the same goal in mind. WE ARE HERE TO LEARN!
My Project
Fostering a love of reading is always the goal in my classroom. Having a library that meets the needs of all my students, ability and interest, is equally important.
Help me give my students books that will help foster a love for reading by allowing them a variety of high interest books, that are on their reading level, which they can read independently.
Because we are a high poverty school, virtual learning because of COVID became very difficult for most students. The gap that has happened in reading is real. With these books, we are practicing dyad reading. This is where less able readers are paired with a more able reader and they select books that they will read together, with the more able reader modeling correct reading fluency, accuracy, and self monitoring, along with intonation, prosody, tone, and expression of the reading selection to the less able reader.
