Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“Look! That says little! L-I-T-T-L-E.” One of the struggling readers in my first-grade class was so excited about spotting a word he knew on a subway sign. Common words, such as "little," are the first ones that emergent readers learn, and mastering common words, or sight words, helps build reading confidence. It's wonderful when words in books and on the street start to become familiar for the students. They begin to see themselves as readers.
Mastering sight words is crucial because it strengthens a student's ability to figure out unfamiliar words. Since most sentences have numerous sights words, knowing those words allows children to tackle unfamiliar words since they generally comprehend the sentence. My bi-lingual first-grade students are eager to learn to read, and sight word mastery is essential for them.
To help my students become proficient with sight words I would like to make working at sight-word learning centers part of the daily literacy block. I am asking for Lakeshore Learning's Complete Sight-Word Center and their Creating Sight-Word Sentences Center. Students love centers because they get to work in groups and they get to learn things on their own. The Sight-Word Center activities allow students to use sight words in a variety of contexts from matching, to reading, to writing, to sentences. These centers give kids the hands-on practice they need to master the most common sight-words. Difficulty is increased gradually so children get tons of practical reinforcement in such important areas as vocabulary development, and recognizing, reading, spelling and using high frequency words in sentences.
These centers would be part of our daily classroom routine, and would help my students develop skills and strategies that will keep them reading far beyond the school building.
Thank you.
