This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second grade teacher at a low income school in Harlem, New York. I would like to provide my students with these blank hardcover books in order to stimulate and develop their writing.
Writing is a hard task to master, but when teachers provide their students with the motivation and encouragement to engage in their writing, the results are amazing. Students become active learners and seek the help they need to write their stories.
Students love publishing their completed stories. So much time and effort goes into their writing that when it is time to share with their classmates and parents they all want a chance.
I want my students to become more invested in their writing. I want them to feel confident in their work and most importantly, I want them to transfer the skills that they have learned as writers.
In the spring, my students will become animal experts. They study one animal and learn all about that animal. Using this information, they write a nonfiction book. This book does not only provide facts the students have learned, but also the various components that they have learned about nonfiction writing, such as powerful realistic illustrations. This nonfiction unit is my favorite because the students invest so much of their time and effort into their books and the classroom environment is filled with the buzz of excitement. I want to add to this excitement, and engage them in their writing.
I want to provide my students with the opportunity to publish their nonfiction book in a hardcover book that will last forever. Not only will they and their parents enjoy the books, but it will definitely add to the sense of accomplishment.
Students will look at their finished book in a hardcover format and will feel like published authors. It will provide them with the motivation to invest their time and develop their writing. Just imagine, 28 students focused on their sentence structure, spelling and punctuation because they know that when their writing is complete they will be able to transfer in onto their hardcover books.
Please help me provide my students with this additional motivation strategy to develop their writing and with a book that they can always look back on.
