This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am in my fourth year of teaching 7th and 8th grade science at a Middle School located in Philadelphia, PA. The school is in a very troubled low income area of the city that gains little support from the community or school district. This is a school with a few selected troubled students that create a disruptive and tough learning environment for the often overlooked good natured majority. Because of the high volume of distractions in the lives of my students it is difficult for them to focus, and many lack motivation to learn and succeed. The school, however, lacks certain materials necessary to enhance the science content and feed that desire to supplement their learning.
The majority of students at my school are below their appropriate reading level at various degrees. They are not able to write complete sentences or spell simple words. I have developed within my science curriculum strategies and methods to incorporate literacy in order to aid them in their struggle. Without certain materials it is difficult to support my students and give them the help they need.
In order to supplement the learning program I have developed, my students are in need of dictionaries for use in the classroom. The school does not have enough dictionaries available for them so I am requesting a class set. The dictionaries will allow students to take responsibility for their own learning and have an additional resource for their use. If students have dictionaries to refer to they will be able to expand their spelling ability, vocabulary and increase reading levels.
Please help support a program intended to raise the levels of achievement for a struggling group of inner city children. These students strive to succeed despite the daily challenges they face in and out of the classroom. Although the school lacks many materials, a classroom set of dictionaries for my students will be a good start at supporting our instructional program. This past year our students made significant gains in areas of reading and math however, there is still much needed progress. Your donation would allow our students to continue growth and reach their academic goals.
