I am in my seventh year of teaching 7th and 8th grade science at Grover Washington Jr. Middle School located in Philadelphia, PA. Grover Washington is in a very troubled low income area of the city that gains little support from the community or school district. This is a school with a few selected troubled students that create a disruptive and tough learning environment for the often overlooked good natured majority. Because of the high volume of distractions in the lives of my students, it is difficult for them to focus, and many lack motivation to learn and succeed. Science is a subject that elicits motivation from them because of its interactive nature. Although I spend a lot of my time, money and effort to enhance learning at this poverty stricken school, it continues to be difficult for me to provide certain materials to supplement this learning, which is why I am asking for your help.
