This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There is nothing better than going into a classroom that has everything you need. From anchor charts to a helpful math manipulative. After working in education for 3 years I have been able to gather several ideas as to what students really like in the classroom that are necessities.
Teaching 5th grade, students have requested a calmer room, more ways to physically work through math and white boards.
They love whiteboards! Not only do they save on paper used in the class, but games are fun to play when a whiteboard is involved. Instead of yelling out an answer, they write out the answer on their board and raise it up. This has been a tried and true way to make sure students are all participating and a silent way for kids to tell you they don't quite understand.
I feel that a classroom that flows is a relaxing and calm classroom. The older students get the more they express that less color is better and more soothing. I love a tidy classroom and feel that leading by example through organization is a great skill for my students.
Math MANIPULATIVE!!! Who doesn't like a math manipulative? Working withing SPED and Title I I have seen what ten blocks, fraction pieces, and fake money can do. Most of the time they bridge the gap that students need. 5th grade is not too old to a physical representation of math.
In conclusion, I feel this project is very important to give students the classroom they will call home. Thank you!
