My Project
As we prepare for the upcoming school year, I am reaching out to ask for your support in helping me provide my students with a meaningful and transformative reading experience. I would love to begin the year with a class set of Look Both Ways by Jason Reynolds, a powerful collection of short stories that offers students the chance to explore the lives of others through a variety of unique and heartfelt perspectives.
Look Both Ways presents a series of interconnected stories about students walking home from school, each revealing different challenges, joys, and emotional truths.
These stories open up essential conversations about empathy, identity, and community. Through this book, my students will learn to see the world through the eyes of others, gaining insight into the diverse experiences that shape people’s lives. They will be challenged to reflect not only on their own perspectives but also on how they can work toward alleviating suffering in others—whether through acts of kindness, advocacy, or simply by choosing to listen and understand.
Our work with this text will go beyond reading comprehension. Through guided discussions, reflective journaling, and collaborative projects, students will actively explore what it means to show compassion in their everyday lives. Success in this unit will be measured not just by academic outcomes, but by visible growth in empathy: how students speak to one another, how they interpret the world around them, and how they act to make a positive difference.
To make this experience possible, I am seeking donations to purchase a class set of Look Both Ways so that every student can engage fully with the text. Your support will allow us to create a classroom culture rooted in compassion, where stories become bridges that connect us. Any contribution, large or small, will make a lasting impact.
