My Students

In the classroom teachers compete with a variety of distractions. In order to really make learning engaging and effective for my students I'd like to reach my visual learners with a document camera. If I am able to immediately create notes and annotations they will be learning at a whole new level.

I teach three different sections of English at a small, rural public school on the Navajo Nation.

My students are incredibly enthusiastic to be exposed to different learning styles. I would love to expose them to more resources than the school can currently provide. I believe I teach some of the best kids in the country! I teach students in 11th and 12th grade. Many are looking at higher education and it has come to my attention that many of my students have difficulty preparing for the transition to college. At the school, there are very few resources to help prepare them. Their friends and family want to do all they can, but since many of them are not college graduates themselves, they are unsure of where to start. The school, the district, and many of the students' families lack the money to provide the students with the tools they need to complete high school successfully and move on to college seamlessly.

My Project

A document camera projects anything you put underneath it directly onto a screen. The beauty with this type of technology is that you don't need messy transparencies that are difficult to see and bleed. I will be able to show students how to annotate and really dive into writing. They will be able to pick out important passages in the text and it will be easier to follow along with me constantly projecting what we're doing when. A document camera will also help me add notes that students say immediately. In each of my 5 classes I will be able to add the students' original comments immediately to the paper we're working on. This will encourage students to speak up because their voice will be represented in front of the class in a safe way.

This project is important because students need to be exposed to various learning styles.

If I only say the notes and write up the important ones many of my ELL students will not be able to understand new content. With the help of a document camera my teaching can reach more students in each of my classrooms and for years to come. Adding technology like this in the classroom allows students to come in contact with instruments they will be working with in the competitive world beyond high school.
