My Project
Recently, I was fortunate to attend an amazing professional development course through the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education with Orton Gillingham! It has completely changed the way I teach and the way my students will learn to read. It was also a great program to assist those struggling readers and students with dyslexia.
This is an amazing approach to phonics that allows teachers to individualize instruction and is backed by years of science and research!
In order to teach this approach with fidelity, my students will require specific materials, such as sand trays (to write letter and words in), mesh sheets, red/green crayons for more sensory learning, and mesh bags to help organize those materials.
Our school is considered a Title I school. Many of the children live in low-income housing, hotels, and could be in shelters. For some, English is their second language, and many have experienced traumatic experiences that most of us can hardly comprehend. Some have special needs and every student at our school qualifies for free breakfast and free lunch. My students work hard and are eager to learn new ideas and skills.
