Because of the students' disabilities they are needing frequent breaks with sensory input. For some students this is spending some time in a swing. For some it is jumping on a trampoline to release energy. Some students are overwhelmed by the normal sights and sounds of school and need a quiet, dark place to calm down. Some students also need a safe place to practice their motor skills such as stepping up or getting up and down off the ground.
My students have severe and multiple special needs (such as autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, and rare syndromes) and will use this sensory/motor lab in a variety of ways to help meet their sensory and motor needs in order to be more productive throughout the school day.
Not only will it help the most impaired students in self contained classes (4 of them), but also other students on campus that just need a break throughout the day or students needing more guidance on social skills. It's a win-win! Sensory, sensory!
