This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many students in my Biology and Human Anatomy classes would benefit from having access to real tissues instead of diagrams and learning some basic dissections skills. Unfortunately, the curriculum and budget do not allow this to happen during regular class time, so we made a club.
My students have been attending school in a low-income district with a large minority population.
They have not had the educational opportunities that many other students get. They are eager to learn. Many of the students in this club will be the first in their family to attend college and want to go into medical careers. The skills and opportunities offered in this club are not offered anywhere else in the district.
My Project
The resources I'm requesting include several different specimens for dissection. With these specimens, students will be able to learn basic dissection skills. They will also be able to examine and compare anatomical structures and observe evolutionary changes and adaptations in different groups of animals. This opportunity will prepare them for success when they enter biology labs in college.
This program is the only opportunity students in this district have to learn skills necessary for success in college biology and pre-medical programs.
The district no longer provides funding for it, but students who participated in previously funded years report increased confidence and success in college biology labs. Students are very enthusiastic about this club, and I would love to be able to accommodate their desire to learn!
