Help me give my students choice books that interest them! The gift of loving to read will take them far in life.
Our students love spending time in the library and it is the hub of our school.
We are a rural K- 4th grade school . The students at my school are primarily low income with the majority of them being free or reduced price lunch program recipients. The school is a safe, loving environment where they can thrive. We have a diverse student population, but they are alike in that they are eager to read and learn.
As the librarian, I have instilled a passion for reading in my students. My student’s display their passion for reading when the books they have eagerly waited on become available for them to check-out as well as in their disappointed faces when a book is not available or damaged beyond repair. Freedom of choice is a key to getting students motivated and excited about reading.
We are limited with our district dollars and would like funds to purchase new books.
My Project
The best way to get students to read more is to help them find one book in a series that they love, then they will want to continue to read each and every book in the series.
These books will allow my students to read for pleasure and enjoy reading.
When children can freely choose what they want to read, they will be reading for pleasure, not because there is an assignment due. A choice allows children to be enthusiastic about what they are reading, and in turn they will be engaged. When you give a child the choice to read what they desire, they will want to read more.
