Hello, all! I teach English 1 to 9th graders and STAAR retesters and my classroom is designed to be a place for them to go and experience the world, all while sitting in their seats. My kids are eager to learn, inquisitive, excitable, and when given the chance, astounding, and they are excited for the new school year as freshmen! All students are on free/reduced-price lunch and we do all we can to get them the resources they need, so the community usually gets together to assist the children in getting the best education they can so that they can succeed outside of the classroom.
This book is a personal favorite of mine as it keeps the students engaged, and helps them discover the nuances of poetry while identifying with the main character in a personal way. This class set will be given to each student during the class period to read and take care of, not only giving them materials but teaching them responsibility.
The most important thing about this book is that it is a person of color, and in a neighborhood not unlike their own.
I hope to give them a positive reading experience and teaching them that poetry is not as foreign as they once thought.
